After origonally settling in East Anglia for many centuries the
Whisson/Whissons/Whysson/Wisson & Wison clans began to move further
afield. Some in the 1901 Census were found in Merseyside (1 being
Irish born), others in Nottinghamshire & Plymouth. The Whitby brothers
John & William Flaxman Whisson took their families to settle in various
parts of County Durham in North East England. Some of their descendents
still living in the Billingham & Eaglescliffe areas of the southern
reaches of that county into the 21st Century.
Going further back Whissons were found in 17th & 18th Century
Cambridgeshire.
In the same centuries, nearly 200 years before George Whisson sailed
from Wells' up to Whitby a number of Whissons were recorded in the
parish records, then subsequently submitted to the IGI (International
Genealogical Index) for reference.
The first recorded northern Whissons found so far were a family who
lived in the Bishop/West Auckland area of south west County Durham, the
patriarch of Which was James Whissons.
Then on August 31st 1778 at a parish of Houghton Le Spring near
Durham City the wedding of Rosanna Whisson to John Jackson was recorded. |
